For my birthday weekend, my husband and I (yes I am married, we tied the knot in February this year #Newlywedbliss lol) we decided that we would have mini getaway to key west!
We have been eyeing the keys for some time now, but our plans to go kept of being pushed back. So we were very excited that the opportunity came around again this time!
So on Friday we hoped in the car for the drive to key west!
We were only going to be there for one full day so we mainly wanted to focus on relaxation and spending quality time together, but had room for some activities.
My husband had the great idea to make quick stop in Key Largo where we had lunch at Snappers, they are known best for their seafood menu, tiki bar and live music.
It’s a waterfront restaurant so we had the opportunity to indulge in the view and great live music!
We really enjoyed our fish tacos and fries, delicious! Our waiter, Will, was super nice and patient as well!
After lunch, We took on the road again to our final destination, Key West!
Our stay was at the Gates Hotel, the room was very pretty and spacious.
Arriving at night we just took a quick plunge in the pool to end the night.
The next morning, we woke up around lunch time , and went on to get ready to hit Mallory square in Duval street. The hotel offers a free shuttle that drops guests off at Mallory square.
Downtown, parking can be a bit hectic between paying for parking and actually finding a spot, so that was a great plus having a shuttle service to pick you up and drop you back off.
Our shuttle dropped us off to Mallory square and we took a quick stroll to Bagatelle where we had lunch. Bagatelle is french restaurant that was previously a home built by Captain Frederick Roberts in 1884!! Talk about a history lesson!

It was a beautiful day, after our delicious lunch, we embarked to go visit The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum!
It was very hot but the streets were bustling with live music from different bars, tourist walking around as well, we saw nice houses, so it wasn’t too bad.
Pit stop at a local art gallery!
The Ernest Hemingway home is a very popular place to go in key west. The stories behind this national landmark are at the same time fascinating, humorous, and tragic, but it is definitely worth a peek inside if you are on the island!
The admission is $14 per person and they have a guided tour every 15 minutes or so.
I recommend you wait for the guided tour, she is very entertaining and tells many stories and details that you will not get to know about by just walking through the house. And after the guided tour you are free to roam around at your leisure.
I won’t spoil it to much because you must see it for yourself as well but all I will say is that the house is built with limestone which basically makes it hurricane and water damage proof and there are PLENTY of cats!! So go go go!
On our way back we stopped for kabobs, Jamaican rum punch, and of course some Ice cream, I am obsessed with raspberry fudge ice cream now!
Side note: please wear comfortable shoes, preferably sneakers to walk the streets, my slides were super cute 🙂 but they were not best choice to be walking around for the whole afternoon. Thank me later!
We caught our shuttle back to the hotel to catch a nap and get ready for dinner
We had dinner at Hot Tin Roof, a very nice restaurant with very romantic setting. Dinner was delicious, my husband ordered the ribs and I had the tuna with coconut rice and green chili Thai sauce. I was a bit apprehensive about the coconut rice and was ready to put it aside but it was amazing! We didn’t even bother to take from each other’s plates, that’s how you know the food was TRULY good!
Last but not least, our last stop was for dessert.
We went to the very popular dessert restaurant: Better than Sex!
There they only serve desserts, wine and cocktails named after sexy and sexual things (what’s a sexual thing lol but you get what I’m saying right? yes you do!)
For example I got The Klimax , which is sparkling red wine in a white chocolate rimmed glass and my husband got the Sex Appeal which is sparkling white wine in white chocolate rimmed glass topped with red sugar and we shared the “double stuffed “ which is bread pudding stuffed with Oreo with, wait for it, CHEESECAKE vanilla ice cream on the side! Like how! It was truly divine!
The setting is also associated with the name of the restaurant, with dimmed lights, secluded booth with partial curtains for privacy, chandeliers and the place is decorated with erotic photo on the walls!
Our evening was for sure amazing, we can’t stop raving about that bread pudding and cheesecake ice cream!
Visiting Key West was a great! The island is buzzing with culture, history, great food and beautiful views!
We will definitely be back to see more, do beach-y activities and come back to Better than Sex!!
‘Til next time loves!
